What are alternative therapies for anxiety? Can drinking alcohol make anxiety worse?

Written by Integrative Medicine Researcher on March 23rd, 2008

Amanda j asked:

I’ve been anxious since I was a child, I have been diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder but I am not seeking therapy for it now. What are alternative therapies for it? And do poor habits like drinking too much alcohol make it worse?

Drinking can ease your anxiety but when it wears off it will come back, then you might get dependant which is not good. you need to talk to your Doctor !

Drinking can make any health condition worse. In your case, you drink to deal with stress, which makes it worse after awhile. Some people turn to food, sex, watching TV or any other activity to release anxiety.
Take care,

Check this site out:, it has a free downloadable manual that will teach you how to help remove the reasons for your anxiety. You can also find EFT practitioners that can work with you over the phone. Stop the alcohol if you can, it doesn’t help. Good luck.

Consuming alcohol can indeed make it worse.

are you a tea drinker because if you are there is this tea that a friend of mine drinks that helps her with her anxiety even though it’s bitter at first there is a sweetness after wards, it is helping her and you don’t have to have the ailment to drink their tea!

The tea that my friend is drinking is called Blue Tea green tea and it is good for calming, relaxing, and anxiety.

Hope this helps!

Alcohol definitely makes anxiety worse. Please don’t do that.

Of course alcohol makes things worse.

Who do you think make up the majority of alcoholics and drug addicts? Many people with anxiety realize that it is difficult for them to deal with problems so they drink or do drugs to relax and forget their worries. This is an unhealthy approach to problem solving. Trying to forget problems leads to worse anxiety and more drinking.

Start by seeing a therapist. They will probably have you interview with a psychologist. If you act the way you always do they will accurately diagnose your problems. Of course if you muscle relaxers and things like that, you could lie…. this would be worse than drinking.
