PHD in a specific field?

Written by Integrative Medicine Researcher on January 7th, 2008

Jennifer L asked:

I thought it was nutrition, but then I here about integrative medicine. What I want to do is be a nutritionist, like a PHD nutritionist but I want to not be a normal nutritionist, I want to have an integrative approach to it. With like half western practices, half eastern. Like I wanna help with not just obese people, but people who are not fat enough, and for people dying of deasiese that want to be as healthy as possible so I make a diet for them, this might be a dumb question. But is that still a nutritionist degree. And I want to make medicine, like organic medicine for people wanting to get healthy that is half western/eastern or fully eastern. So is this still nutrition if making medicine is envolved. Please site sources!

If I were you I might explore environmental medicine and toxicology in addition to nutrition and integrative med. Think about getting an undergrad in nutrition and then going on to get a doctorate in EM or toxicology. You might also find an interdisciplinary graduate program interesting. U of Washington has a well-established department.

If you really want to learn Eastern practices, consider spending time abroad: before, during and/or after your schooling. Interesting ways to practice and prepare medicine and diet abound, and you can always continue to educate yourself, even after getting your doctorate ;)
